Renee Steinhagen

Executive Director, New Jersey Appleseed

Ms. Steinhagen has been NJA’s Executive Director since 1998, during which time she has established herself as one of the State’s leading public interest advocates. Prior to New Jersey Appleseed, Ms. Steinhagen was a plaintiff labor lawyer for the firm Ball, Livingston & Tykulsker (New Jersey), and Vladeck, Waldman, Elias & Engelhard (New York), where she became familiar with workers compensation, unemployment insurance, labor, and discrimination law. She previously worked at the law office of Shulte, Roth and Zabel (New York), the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Community Service Society in New York. Ms. Steinhagen was appointed in 2003 by the Governor to the Department of Banking and Insurance’s Healthcare Coverage Task Force, committee on the Uninsured, where she participated in a year-long examination of the health and economic needs of the uninsured in the State, and analyzed various policy options designed to address them. Ms. Steinhagen is also Chairperson of the New Jersey Citizens Coalition on Implementation of the Help America Vote Act, representing over thirty concerned groups. Ms. Steinhagen is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, and has a Masters Degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Government at Princeton, where she focused on housing and tax policy. She received her BA from Williams College.
